
Turner Hawkins is currently in his third year as the Assistant Director of Bands at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tennessee, where his responsibilities include direction of the Concert Band, Basketball Pep Band (which he organized upon arriving at the school in 2017), and co-teaching both of the Dobyns-Bennett Marching Bands. In his tenure at “DB”, the nationally-recognized competitive marching band has been a two-time Grand Nationals Finalist and was named the 2018 Class AAA National Champion, his concert band received sweepstake superior ratings, and the full marching band will march down Pasadena’s famed Colorado Boulevard in the 2020 Tournament of Roses Parade. Turner holds a degree in Music Education and Bassoon Performance from Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, his hometown. Students from his private bassoon studio have qualified for All-State and regional honor bands on both the middle school and high school levels in Kentucky and Tennessee.
Highly engaged in the realm of drum corps and marching band from an early age, Turner’s marching experience includes two years with the Madison Scouts and two years with the Concord Blue Devils, all on tuba. He spent two summers on the brass staff of the Oregon Crusaders, including spending the 2018 season as the Low Brass Coordinator, before joining the brass faculty of the Blue Stars for the 2019 season. Currently, he is on the brass instructional staff of the Concord Blue Devils, and has taught or consulted with high school groups across the Southeastern United States.
